CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

NEW PREMISES IN MORAYf PLACE.

Three years ago .Messrs Macky, Logan, Caldwell, well-known in the northern part of tlio dominion, started business in Dunedin. The premises then consisted of a sample room, in which was carried a small amount o£ stock, whilo the bulk of tho business was done from sample representing Auckland stock. During tnis period the business of tho firm has increased to sucli an extent that it was necessary to acquire or build larger premises. With this object in view the iirra acquired tlio freehold property in Moray place occupied for many years by Messrs M'Vicar and Co., glass and china merchants. This sitb possesses three great natural advantages—direct access to the wharves, tho railway, and to tho principal business part of the city. Tho building originally consisted of three storys and a basement, but this has now been completely transformed and remodelled into a commodious and up-to-date five-story warehouse, capable of carrying largo and assorted stocks. The enlarged warehouse, owing to its central position and. imposing appearance, forms a valuable asset and adjunct to the architecture of tho city. In tho meantime tho warehouse occupies only one-third of the area available, but Messrs Macky, Logan, and Caldwell have such faith in the prospects of this part of tho dominion that they hope before long that the business will have increased to such an extent that they will be compelled to add to the present premises and build on the whole of the property. The windows in the now building are a special feature. They have been designed to give the maximum amount of light throughout, and the designer has entirely succeeded in his efforts. Special attention has also been given to the ventilation, through tho introduction of French casement windows. An automatic passenger lift of the latest model and design is to be installed for the convenience of clients. Telephones connecting each department with the exchange have been installe3 in different parts of the warehouse. The manager's office is situated on the ground floor, and a well-lighted, up-to-date counting house is placed on the first floor. This latter will be under tho direct controi ot a certified accountant. The most modern invoicing and bookkeeping automatic machine is being installed in the office—typing, adding, checking,, etc., being done in one operation. Tho departments have been arranged as . follows :—Basement—packing, entering, and despatching; ground floor —Manchester furnishings and dresses; first floor—fancy millinery and furs; second ~ floor—mantles, blouses, and underclothing; third floor— hosiery, _ haberdashery, foreign fancy, and shop fittings; fourth floor, clothing, mercery, and leather goods. The building is fitted "with the electric light, installed by Messrs A. and T. Burt (Ltd.), and the contractors' were Messrs Fletcher Bros. Mr D. G. Mowat, x\.N.Z.IJL, M.A.A. (Lond4, is the architect, and he ia to be congratulated on the fine result of the wort which he has had under his charge.
