NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The . second day of the New Zealand swimming championships to-day wu3 favoured by iine weather, {though the water was oold. In tlio Teams' K-aoo 0. Brioo reduced tho Now Zealand reoord (liia own) to 62 3-ssec, this being tho only record broken. Champion won tho 440 Yards Championship with the greatest caso in smin sifceo—four seconds outside tho record. Canterbury A and Wellington B tied in tho Water Polo Match, each scoring a goal. Owing to tho men being engaged in other events the Canterbury team did not start in, tho Teams' Race. Tho 50 Yards Scratch Race- provided a

lino contest, and was won by C. Brico by a touch. Results:—

50 YARDS SCRATCH RACE.—First heat: C. Briee (Wellington) 1, F. Bridges (Napier) 2, C. V. Fordham (Wellington) 3. Also started: P. V. Mason (Canterbury). Briee swam at a great pace, ami won, slowing down, by about half a yard. Time, 28 l-ssec. Second heat: A. O'Haro (Auckland) 1, E. Seymour (Napier) 2. Also startofl: J. D. Stewart (Auckland), J, Grant (Hawcra). Won by a narrow margin. Time, 29 2-ssee. Third heat: K. Roberts (Wellington) 1, M. C. Stranger (Wellington) 2, G. L. Bull (Canterbury) 3. Also started: C. Kelly (Wellington). Time, 29sec. Final. C. Brice 1 F. Roberts ... 2 F. Bridges .•. 3 Won by 2ft, with a foot between second and third. Time, 27 4-ssec. 220 YARDS BREAST STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. C. Atkinson (Canterbury) ... 1 W. Cookson (Canterbury) 2 N. M'.Cartney (Napier) 3 Also started: W. R. Borton (Auckland), W. B. Jerron (Auckland), and E. L. Bull (Canterbury). Atkinson went to tho front from the start, and at the end of the first lap was dightly in front of M'Cartney, who was swimming strongly. The Napier man proved more adept at the turn. When 150 yards had been oovered Atkinson was a coupio of yards to the good, and Cookson was up level with M'Cartney. Over the remainder of tho distance Atkinson gradually drew away, and won by nearly four yards. M'Cartney was a yard further back. Jerrom was fourth, Horton fifth, and Bull sixth. Time, 3imin 17 4-ssec. Cookson's time was 3min 22 2-sseo, and M'Cartney's time 3min 27 3-ssec. Only the placed men got under tho standard time. 300 YARDS OPEN HANDICAP. A. M. Smith, 18sec 1 K. Seymour (Napier). After two false 6tarte tho competitions got away well together. Champion and Freyberg showed the way over tho first 100 yards, which wore thrown behind in 69 seconds. Champion' and Freyberg were still together at 150 yards, but Freyberg then droppod back, and was never again conspicuous. At 300 yards Champion was threo or four yards in front, Welson being second. Then came Heaiy and T. Seymour, swimming stroke for 6troke. Champion won by about threo yards from Welson, who beat Ilealy by five yards. Time, smin 58sec. Dawson and Grant gave up at 200 yards. 500 YARDS FLYING SQUADRON CHAMPIONSHIP. Wellington (0. Brice, B C. Freyberg, R. Ilealy, F. Roberts, and M. C. Stranger) 1 Auckland (M. E. Champion, A. O'Haro, 11. Purdy, J. D. Stewart, and C. Welson,) 2 Canterbury did not start. The race between Champion and Briee (the last man of each team) was tho best of the meeting, Briee winning by a touch.
