THE BRITOMART MONUMENT
GOVERNMENT URGED TO ACQUIRE SITE. (Per United Pkess Association.) AKAROA, March 8. The Hon. Mr Mackenzie visited Akaroa to-day, and met several deputations, which brought before him a number of matters, chiefly of local interest. One request was* that the Government should endeavour to acquire the site of the Britomart Monument, which is erected on the spot where the British flag was first hoisted. ,At present it stands partly on private land, the.owner of which, prior to his decease, had expressed tho intention of giving the necessary area to allow the public to have access to the monument. He did not carry out his intention, however, and his trustees consider it is not in their orower to give the land.
Ihe Minister said he recognised that the monument was a national one, and undertook to communicate with the trustees on the subject of tho acquisition of the necessary area.
