" Pioneer Recollections, Chiefly of the Mataura Valley," consists of a number of articles contributed to the Mataura Ensign by Mr H. Beattie, of Gore. Those who engage themselves in the collection and preservation of early records are doing a valuable work, which is doubly valuable since the opportunities of gaining these are rapidly passing away.'' It would be well if every locality had its. chronicler, as the Mataurai Valley has in Mr Beattie, who has made the best use of the material available.
The Century Magazine for November contains the usual liberal assortment of highclass matter illustrated by capital pictures. There is a very striking article on theatres, tho illustrations showing some of tho earb'est date. Probably tho most important article is one by M. Elie Metclmikofl, who is assistant director a.t tho Pasteur Instituto in Paris. It is he who has put forwani the surprising assertion that curdled milk is not only a panacea for infeotious diseases, but is conducive to longevity. He puts forward scientific roasons which aie not beyond the comprehension o£ the ordinary reader.
