SOUTHLAND NOTES.
(From Our Own* Corp.espokdekt.) INVERCARGILL, Julv 18. Arrangements havo been made "through the medium of Mr J. A: Hauan, M.P. for a visit to.lnvercargill by the Hon. Dr Fiudlay, in connection with the proposal to carry out reclamation work in the New River Estuary by prison labour. The Minister of Justice is expected to be in town on Thursday next, when lie will be met by nwmbers of the interested local Indies and by members of the ' Law Society and the Prisoners' Aid Spciety, the idea being to put forward ». scheme whereof the reclamation of 3000 acres of the estuary is one part, and (lie formation of a reformatory farm (in connection with the prison) on a proportion of l-hc reclaimed area is the other pa.rt. As the proposal appears to afford a cheap means whereby the present prison system may be extended in conformity with ideas recently .expressed by the Minister of Justice, it is thought that there is good- reason to believo that the Minister's sympathy with the proposal will be enlisted, and that something practical will result. The concert recently held .at' Bluff to honour Miss Eri Thomson realised a .netamount of £36 16s 6d, which is a substantial addition to the £125 which resulted from the Invercargil! concert.
