THE PROPOSED' AMENDMENTS.' (Pep. United Pnzss Association.) ' AUCKLAND, September 6. At a- largely-attended meeting of' the committee of the Now, Zealand Shipowners' Federation this afternoon' tho .Arbitration Act 1 Amendment Bill now before Parliamentwas fully discussed, and the following motion .was unanimously carried:—"That i;his federation approves of the' proposed amendments to the Conciliation and- Arbitration Act. generally, and appreciates the efforts of the Government to overcome the difficulties which ' have hitherto been attached to tho settlement, of i labour disputes."

NAPIER, Septombor 6. A largely-attended meeting of theHawke's Tta J* Branch of the Employers' Association was held to-day, when tho following'resolutions wero adopted:—"(l) That this association approves, of tho method of appointing Industrial Councijs, provided . that satisfactory arrangements can bo made by the appointment of Suitable and permanent presidents of umvuostionablo ability,' and that two presidents should bo appointed for each island; (2) that, the proposed method of collecting .workmen's fines by the employers _ be strongly objected to by this association: (3) that, this association approves of tho proposal that contributions to pinions and associations by other thaa members should l bo mado compulsory; (4) that applications for permits to work for less than the minimum wage should be made to tho Inspector of Awards; (5) that this association of tho inclusion of gasworks and electrical energy works under tho Factories Act; (6) that iJiia association is of opinioQ that tho half-holiday now ap. pointed for shops anil factories should bo made applicable to all places except tho four chief centres (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Diinedin)." . , A meeting of delegates from the various trades unions in Napier was hold this evening to discuss tho proposed amendments to the Industrial Arbitration • and Conciliation Act. The meeting was unani- | mously opposed to the establishment of an ! Industrial Council, and also to many other of tho proposed alterations. A copy of tho various resolutions will bo forwarded to the Minister in charge of the bill.
