ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 2. An elderly lady, Mrs Ann ''Lindsay, a widow, CO years .of age, who resided with he- sons at Epeom, was killed in Queiin street this afternoon. She was crossing the road when, in avoiding a tram ear, she ran into one of Messrs A. B. _ Wright and Son's express carts. The driver did his utmost to pull the horso up, but was unable to do so. The horse appeared to strike the woman on the he.ad. Sho was carried into a. shop, and Dr Jones was soon in attendance, but ho Could only pronounce life extinct.
HAMILTON September 2. At the adjourned inquest on the body of Patrick M'Swcenoy, at Tangiri, the medical evidence pointed to the probability of deceased being alivo when he ontered the; water. There wcfc no marks of violence. A verdict of death by drowning was returned. i '.
THAMES, September 2. Tho body of Frederick Naive, who was drowned in the Piako Itivcr on Friday, was recovered on Sunday by dragging. Tho inquest elicited no new facts. The opinion was expressed that tho deceased was asleep at. the stern of> tho boat, and that he woke up suddenly and toppled over in a fright. A verdict was returned that the deceased was accidentally drowned. MAS'I'ERTON, September 2. An inquest was held at Mataikona. on Saturday last on the body of Patrick Banning, who was found dead in his whare on Friday last with a. gunshot wound in his head. After hoaring evidence tho jury returned a verdict that tho deceased committed suicide while of unsound mind. GISBORNE, September* 2. Further , particulars as to ' the accident to the Haupiri's boat at Hick's Bay show that a heavy sea struck the boat as it was "returning to tho shin, and, besides sweeping La-wrence overboard, it caused the crew to ioso their oars, leaving them with only the steer oar to work tie boat. Lawrence, who was not a good • swimmer, soon sank, and thoso left in'the boat had a difficulty in getting back to tho steamer. The bodj; has not yet been recovered. - WELLINGTON. September 2. Charles "William "Whiteford. 'W years of age, while engaged on telegraph line'work at- Kilbirnie this afternoon, fell to ono side of the ladder. .When he was taken down by his mate he was dead. It was supposed he died from heart disease.'Whiteford leave's a widow and throe or four children. CHRISTOHUROH, September 2. An elderly man named Jame6 Stark, aged 67, died suddenly at his house at Woodend on Sunday evening. To-daj an inquestwas held by Mr V. G., -Day, coroner, and after hearing tho evidence the jury returned a verdict that tho death was cwing to heart failure! The man Patrick Swfceney, who' was admitted to the Hospital at midnight on Sunday suffering-, from a wound in his throat, said to have been self-inflicted with a 'razor, was found to be progressing favourably on inquiry being made at tho Hospital last evening. „ . ■ ;
