SUBMARINE DISTURBANCE

A REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE,

(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 31. Captain Ross, of the schooner Ysabel, which arrived from Tonga to-day, reports that when iri. the locality of the submarine disturbance previously reported, the chart showing 1003 fathoms, a. terrific explosion was heard. Several of the crew declared that tho vessel had struck something. Tho mate went aloft aiul reported shoal water ahead and on both bows. The Ysabel was then running before a north-east- gale, and her position was 6crious. Another shock shook tho vessel from stem to stern. The pumps were used, but drew np water, and tiro shoals reported proved to bo only cloudy water. A smell of sulphur was very pronounced. The third and last shosk was experienced at 6 p.m., as darkness was setting in. Thcf locality was latitude 21deg '18min south, longitude 175deg- 47min west. It was a very dark and raihv night, and nothing could be seen as to the nature of tho disturbance.
