THE EXHIBITION.

THE PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT COMPETITIONS. (From Ocp. Special Coerespoxdext.) CIIRISTCHURCH, March 20. Tlie weather 10-day was brjghter than yesterday for the sscontl day of the fir.e brigade competitions 011 the Exhibition Sports Ground, but a- chill, wind blow continuously, and by tho evening had increased almost to .a gale. Tho competitions were of even more spectacular interest than those of yesterday, and the attendance of the public was intich larger than on the opening day. In the evening, despiic the nnpropitious weather, an immense crowd witnessed the spectacular demonstration "lighting tho flames" by the city tiro brigades. Tho display was accompanied by the eleventh exhibition of fireworks by a representative of Pain and Sons, London. Only two more of these firework entertainments will be given—one on Wednesday next, and Ihc final one on the night of Easter Monday, when a specially extensive and elaborate display will be given, in .which the whole remaining stock of fireworks will bo used. From tho point of view of attendance, these displays of fireworks have been quite the most potent'' attractions that the Exhibition lias seen since its inception. Tile fact that, they can he witnessed without special charge may have something to do with their popularity, but whatever kind of weather is experienced they never fail to draw; a crowd of many thousands to the Exhibition grounds. There has been great activity to-day in brightening up the district courts for the judging to-morrow. Pot plants and other decorations have been in great request, and the courts have now a very festive appearance. Seventy boats are cxpectcd to take part in tlis torchlight procession to be held on the. Avon to-night in connection with the lire brigades' demonstration. The procession wilt be her.dod by several motor launches filled with bandsmen, and firemen bearing torches and discharging fireworks will till the smaller craft.

Jli« 0. Livingstone was the successful vocalist at a. well-attended popular concert in the concort hall to-night, and Mr Goorgo Weston, leader of the orchestra, gave several violin solos. Solo contributions of several other members of the orchestra to ilis various programmes have heen a highly , popular feature. There has been a slight misunderstanding between the 'authorities in regard to some of tile altractions advertised to (alio placc in connection with the physical development competition and search for the buried nugget, in Wonderland on Friday. Some adverse comments having teen made against- the proposals of the Wonderland management to offer prizes for the most handsome female arm and shoulders and most handsome female ankle, to bo exposed have, Tvlr Munro notified the manager of Wonderland that he had not- given permission to hold a beauty show, and in the meantime that ileni must be. withdrawn. The manager of Wonderland, howover, states that the competitions indicated are comprised in the physical development contests, which were duly authorised, and that they will be held accordingly, the ofi'er o£ a prizo for the prettiest girl in Christohurch being withdrawn as constituting the only beauty show on the programme. Mr Munro has made if plain that lie did not understand Ihe position so, and states 1 hat though lie lias uiven permission for the holding of physical development competitions, be stiil reserves to himself ,the right to see tiiat they arc carried out in a proper manner, 'and if he takes exception to any feature it will have to bo stopped at. once. The Wonderland proprietory states that the competitions will bo so managed that, there will be no opportunity for anyone to cavil. •• To-day's attendance was 15,906. _ J.lio Governor and ihc Acting Prime Miuistct wore present at tlio fireworks display.
