The Southland Racing Club had splendid weathcT to-dav fcr the first day oi its autumn meeting, and tho attendance was about up to that of last year, 'file racing was not of a specially interesting character, though close finishes took place in two events—the Flying Handicap and the County !' Handicap. The day, unfortunately, did not 1 pass without mishap, Trump, in tho Trades- r men's Handicap, running against a. post and ' throwing' his rider (Wilson), whose leg was 1 badlv broken. In the Handicap Steeplechase, Iteaidon (on Boval Shell), Thistlcion (on . Kimua-), and M'Kay 1(011 Cronje) were un- ' seated.
