CARTERTON, March 16. A fire at Greytown destroyed the Palace Hall and two other buildings. Tho firo brigade was soon on tho scene, but tho water gave out. Tho two front rooms in the hall wero used by a photographer and tobacconist. Insurances: On the shops— £200 eaoh;_on the hall—£4oo, in the Now Zealand office. The Volunteers, who used tho hall as a (Wished, lost a quantity of arms and ammunition, which were insured to the .amount of £100: and their loss ia £50 above that amount. The insurances on the adjoining shoo'are not stated.
WELLINGTON. March 16. A young married man, .Walter Jennings, employed « s a letter-carrier in tho Postal Department, has been committed for trial on a. charge of stealing £2 from a postal packet handed to him to deliver.
BLENHEIM, March 16. Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands and party, who aro exploring the Clarence Valley with a view- to closer settlement, liavo entered the valley, and aro proceeding successfully. They lave a cavaicado of 25 horses, inelmlinjr 14- pack horses, and aro experiencing favourable weather. The coun. try is much denuded by rabbits.
ASHBUIiTON, March 16. At the Magistrate's Court to-day William George Smith, who had been in the employ of Charles Begp: and Co.. music-sellers, pleaded " Guilty '* to a number of changes of embezzlement and forgery, and was com. nutted for sentence to tho Supremo Court, Christchurch.
