Mr Frederick Jolin Mouat, of the Crown Lands Department, war admitted by his Honor Mr Justice Cooptr yesterday as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, Mr A'ifred Hintz, an ex-pupil of the Union Street School, and formerly in the service of the Otago Education Board, has heen appointed first assistant at the Temuka District High School. There were 13 applicants for the position. Mr B. H. Dtmmall, a visitor from Singapore, has returned to Dunedin after a visit to the southern eoltl lakes, and expresses warm appreciation of tlie sccncry met with during his tour. Mr Dunmall leaves for the north in a day or two, via. the Otira and Bullcr Gorges, thence to Wellington and the thermal regions of the north. Mr J. Millar, Miss M. V. Millar, and Miss T. L. May, from Horsham, Victoria, have relumed from a visit to Lake Wakatipu, and leave for Rotorua and Auckland to-day, via the Otira and Buller Gorges. Constables Hiekcy »d M'Glone, both of whom arc stationed at King street, are under orders to transfer, the former to Murton, in the Wanganni district, and the latter to Orepuke, in the Southland district. Constable C. 11. Lemmon has been transferred to-Inver-cargiil. Mr S. E. Grevillc-Smith, of the Auckland Observer, who has been on a visit to South Africa, returned, !o New Zealand by iho steamer Wimmera, and was in Dunedin yesterday. lie is firmly impressed with the conviction that tho Transvaal, under existing conditions, is not a white man's country. At tho recent accountants' examination, held in November last, Mr L. C. Ryan, formerly of Alexandra, succeeded in passing the associates' grade. Eighty-seven sat for the examination, out of which 37 passed.Tho Tuapeka Times states that Mr John M'Caw, who has occupied the position of Presbyterian missionary at Tuapeka West district during the past 12 or more years, intimated to his congregation at Tuapeka Flat on Sunday evening that, having accepted an appointment in ths North Island, lie would shortly be leaving the district. The Western Star reports the death of one of Southland's earliest pioneers, in the person of Mrs Agues Boniface, at the Riverton Hospital, on Saturday, at the advanced ago of 82 yen,rs, Deceased was a native of AVaterford, Ireland, and camo out to Sydney when a girl, where she married. After staying there a while, she in company with her husband and children left for iS T ew Zealand, arriving in Dunedin, where the late Mr Boniface worked for the late Mr John Jones. After a short stay they made their way to Riverton, arriving there in 1848. After two years' residence in Riverton they returned to Dunedin, living there for 11 years. Filially she and her family fettled in Riverton, remaining in the district up to the time of her demise. " Granny," as she was more familiarly called, who was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1899, leaves a family , of five sons, four daughters, 62 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren to mourn their loss. The servico in connection with the funeral of Mr J. P. Armstrong was held in St. Matthew's Church at 8.50 yesterday morning, the service, being read by the Itev. W. A. Curzou-Siggers, in the presence of members of tho family and a number of the deceased's personal friends. These included the Rev. A. Don, Mr, J. P. Arnold, Mr A. R. Barclay, Mr F. J. Stilling, the Hon. W. M. Bolt, the ffon. H. Gourley, Mr C. S. Reeves, Mr J. A. Hislop, Mr P. C. Corliss, Mr P. Leech, Mr J. A. Haslctt, Mr P. J. Mouat, Mr James Wilson, Mr R, T. Wheeler, Mr T. Low, Mr A. E. J. Blakelev, Mr W. Oram Ball, Mr H. W. G. Robinson. Mr W. M, Adam, Mr Jaines Richitdson, and others. Considering the wet weather and tho early hour, a large and representative procession of citizens followed tho remains of the departed to their Testing place in the Southern Cemetery.
