THE MORNINGTON TRAMWAY.

I o j The second temporary oar was placed on ! tho line yesterday at 9 o'clock, and a regular | service at intervals of 15 minutes was run .during the clay, with a quicker service bofcween 5 and 6.30. Tho cars will be fitted with coverings in a few days. The temporary cnginchouse has been completed, and a email office is in course of erection. Elootrio signal belli) and telephone have also been fitted up. A great improvement lias been made to the track. Tho slot beams, .which were closed in many places, have been opened and stayed back to the brackets of the yokes with tie rods; consequently the gripper now passes easily through the slot, and there is an absence of the sudden checks to the descending cars experienced in the past, and at the same time no extra, strain is imposed on tho engine by having to open the slpt on tho up line. Advantage has also been taken of the stoppage to ic-loan the tunnel out, and the drains leading from the same. Upwards of 50 loads of mud havo been removed up to the present, and the cleaning operations will bo continued at night after the oars cease running until tho whole is cleaned from end to end, and the rope vims freely on the pulleys clear of the dirt. The largo terminal sheave at the bottom of the tension carriage has been rehushed and fitted with a now spindle, and the leading-out sheave replaood. Tho port-ion of rope destroyed by the fire has heen cut out- and a piece spliced in. The engino in use has been thoroughly overhauled, and is doing the work easily. The pump used for foroing water from tho town to the elied has been overhauled and fitted with improved pulleys, and now supplies plenty of wator for the boilers. The other engines are hoing overhauled, and it is expected that the extension engine will soon ho available for use. Tho engineer is now designing new enw for the extension line. Tho first ear was started exactly three weeks after the taking over of the lino from tho company, and the ongineer (Mr Roberta) is to be commended for his activity.
