(Peu United Press Assoomtion.) • AUCKLAND, March 22. Throe Chinese were charged at the Police Court with being in possession of opium. Won;? Gong was charged with having three tins and a pot, Ah Pong with having seven line, and Way Koyal, alias Ah Houie, with having soven tins of the drug. Mr Cotter, on behalf of the accused, pleaded " Guilty," and asked tho court to impose a light penalty,-as it was the first prosecution which had taken place in Auckland. His Worship remarked that the fine should bo more than nominal, taking into consideration the fact that the places seemed to have been used as opium-smoking dens. He imposed a penalty of £5 each an.d costs, and pointed out that the maximum penalty was £50. John Crotty, a storekeeper at Opnran, was poisoned by eating honey. He is soriously ill, and not oxpeotcd to recover. Ho was brought in to Kawhia.
GISBORNE, March 22. A slight shock of earthquake was experienced shortly after 1 o'clock this morning, At the Port Awamii Court, Piripi Himtaki was charged with assault and robbery at the Mangaohano Hncecourse. The evidence was that accused went behind two other Nntivec. knocked them down, and robbed one of them of £27 and the other of £5. Sergeant Siddels recovered £5 of tlio missing money. Accused pleaded "Guilty," and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. For cruelty to a horee a. Native was fined £10. George Watkins, licensee of the Tolaga Hotel was fined £5 Iβ for supplying liquor to a drunken Native. Notice of appeal wae given.
FEILDING, Maroh 21. Halstead Harley, brewer, was fined £50 and costs for substituting water for beer in casks and making a wrong entry in his books, with intent to evade duty payable under the Boer Duties Act. All the utensils, appliances, and materials used by Har'.ey were confiscated. WELLINGTON.. Maroh 22. A seven-roomed house in Devon street, owned and occupied by Mrs W. A. Carter,
