(Pku Unitki) Phess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. A man named John Burke O'Brien, frequently before the Police Court, was a.r--I'ested by the Lyttelton police fov drunkenness hist night. Shortly after he had been placed in a cell, the sergeant, on going in to visit him, found that lie had taken off his shirt and twisted it into a rope, with which he was trying to strangle himself. The garment was, of course, promptly taken from him, and the sergeant determined to look into his cell frequently. It Wi'-s well that he did so, for on iiis next visit he found that O'Brien had taken the leather laces out of his boots and tied them round his neck so tightly that he was in danger of strangulation. The sergeant took out his knife and quickly had them off, and O'Brien made no further attempts on his life. To-day the beDch sentenced him
to a month's imprisonment for habitual drunkenness, and on the charge of attempted suicide remanded him to be dealt with by Mr Bishop, S.M. I
