SCHOOL OF ART.

The annual exhibition of tho work of the students of the Dunedin School of Art and Design1 was opened in the School of Art, Moray place, yesterday, and will remain open In-day. The "school is probably the oldest school of arl established in the colony, and the nature of the tuition imparted therein, as proved by the numerous specimens of work exhibited from year to year, is such as to fully 'justify its existence. It is now no less than 30 year's finco the 'School of Art was founded, and Mr O. C. Hutton. who brought with him the art materials, necessary to it.= institution, is in charge of it, as he has been without the least interruption from the day when it was first opened.

A great deal of very excellent work is shown o:i the present occasion, and it is not a little remarkable that so largo and good an exhibition of pupils' work can be made, since a great deal of the bo.?t work that lias been done during the year has been pent to Ohristchureli, and forms part of the display of art ill the exhibition in that city. No fewer than 45 frames and 10 casts are thus accounted for, and, it must be admitted, satisfactorily, for, judging- from what remains, the specimens of art that have been pent to the larger exhibition must be such as will do credit to Dunedin, tho pupils, and the school. There has been a more numerous and more regular attendance of pupils in the past than during any previous year, and nothing has been wanting in application. Tho year has been a busy one: for not only have (hero been more students, but the subdivision of tho work has been greater, the classes more numerous, and at least one now branch of study has been followed—namely, landscape painting. As in only a very few instances the names of the pupils appear on tho work, it is only practicable to refer to it in a general way. Nothing that is shown was done specially for exhibition—it is all exercise work,—and each specimen was produced in four hours, wilh three or foiu- c.xc?ptkms, and in those eases the time did not exceed four and a-half hours. As usual, the freehand drawing is very good. There is a capital outline drawing of the Laocoon, and two finely-executed scrolls from casts. The panels in sepia are good, some remarkably m, and loss-cannot be said of the ornamental monochrome drawings from copies. The chalk drawings are (|uite"as good as formerly, and there is our especially creditable—a rosette from the Forum of' Trajan. A good deal of colour work, both in water and oils, is shown, and special mention ought to be made of a tasteful little drawing of a spray of supplejack, with berries, and a design of the same subject conventionalised. The chalk drawings from life are striking, some of them being equal to anything- ever shown as the work of the pupils of the school. There are also some particularly good studies of still life, and, what is a new feature, since this branch of work has only recently been reintroduced into the school course, there arc eight outdoor sketches, some of which are very good, and all are full of promise. The figure studies from the antique are thoroughly artistic, and the model drawing is in keeping with tho othor work done by the pupils, and leaves very little to be desired. 'Some of the modelling is admirable, one head being better than anything of the kind ever previously done in the school. There are several very good pen-and-ink sketches from life, somo capital charcoal work, and the mechanical and building construction drawings show that full attention is paid to this branch of instruction, and that equal success is attained. Tho exhibition is one which will well repay inspection.
