OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD

An ordinary meeting of the Harbour Board, held yesterday, was attended by the Hon. H. Uouriey (chairman), the Hon. D. Pinkeiton, Messrs J. Robin, J. T. Mackerras, W. Daweon, J. Carroll, and J. Thomson. THE LATE 311! A. 11. IiOSS. The Chairman said since their last meeting Mr A. H. Ross, a well-known resident of Duncdin for many years, had passed away. Ho might say that Mr Ross had occupied many public positions in this city. He represented Cavorsham Tor throe years, was mayor of Dunedin for three years, and occupied the position of chairman of the Harbour Board. All of these positions he held with credit, to himself and to the city. He moved—" That the board place on record their high appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the board and the citizens of Dunedin by the late Mr A. H.: Ross during the many years ho occupied a seat at this board, and especially while he occupied the position of chairman of the board ; and that a copy of this minuie be forwarded to the widow and family of doceased, together with an expression of the board's sympathy with them in their bereavement." ' Mi- Mackerras seconded the motion. Ho was assoeialod with Mr Ross for many years on the board, and he entertained for him the highest opinion for the attention he paid' to the work of the board. Mr Ross's heart and soul were thrown into the, affairs of the board, and when lie left this part of the colony they lost a valuable citizen. Mr Carroll also testified to the worth of Mr Ross as a public man, and said he very seldom met one who paid such disinterested attention to the duties devolving upon him as Mr Ross. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. FINANCIAL The bank book, which was laid on the table, showed a credit balance of £13,382 15s 9d. COUIIESrONDENOK. Captain T. Johancssen, master of the barque Viking, wrote applying for a refund of pilotage dues, amounting to £?A 19s 4d, paid upon his vessel, which was compelled to put into Port Chalmers in distress.—Tt was decided to adopt the usual course under similar circumstances, and grant a rebate of hall the dues paid. Mr F. W. Mac Lean, district engineer of railways, wrote:—"At a recent interview with a deputation from the Dunedin City Council the Hon. Minister of Railways promised, in the event of the Stuart street site being adopted, that a road would be formed from Hanover slreet to Stuart street, between the railway and the harbour. It is assumed that your board will co-operate with the Railway department in carrying out this work, as it will be largely for the benefit of the board. I am instructed to consult you as to the most suitable position for the road, which is intended to ha one chain wide." —The Secretary recommended that the road bo formed along the slone embankment, leaving 100 ft clem- between the edge of (he road and the railway boundary for entling-up purposes.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report. The Secretary of the Tiinaru Harbour Board wrote applying for a refund of harbour dues paid at Port Chalmers on account nf the dredge Timaru, which went into dock to clean and refit. —The application was "runted. The locnl agents of the Shaw, Savill, and .Albion Company wrote making a claim asainst the board for alleged damage, through rain, to some galvanised iron ex Mamari.— The Secretary reported that he had written declining liability on behalf of, the board, anc; his action was endorsed.TXSUIITNrj KHPLOTKES. On the motion of Mr Robin, it was resolved that Ihn Finance Committee take into consideration the advisability of having the board's employees insured against accident, nnd report with regard to the matter to the next meeting of the board. REPORTS. The Finance Committee reported that accounts amounting to 51835 7s 7d were passed for payment, and recommended that certain old balances of disputed measurement accounts be written off.—The. report was adopted. ESGtNF.EH'B HKfOKT. The Engineer reported that dredge 222 had completed dredging out the steamers' basin, and had also deepened the western berth of the tongue wharf to 20ft. The bench alongside the wharf, which she could not reach, had been taken out by the Prieslman grab. The d rod to was now working at the lower end of the Victoria wharf, making an approach to where tho Vulcan would be placed to pump into the lower Stuart street nroas. During the month of November 20,666 cubic yards were dredged and pumped on to the reclamation, at a total cost for wnges, stores, and repairs of about 7d per cubic 3'nrd. Part ot the time tho material dealt with was very hard, find also hung badly oh the hopper, re"-sh-iMinat, in consequence, the number of loads dredged. Good progress was being made with Ihn pilo-frtoing of the lower jetty street wharf. Nine, bays, or 37 piles, had been driven in 12 days, or at the rate of three jinr day. A commencement had been made with tho new shed at tho lower Jetty slreot wharf, and the foundations were well in hand.—The report was approved.
