A CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER..
P^LMERSTON NORTH; December 24.
J. Ernest Nicklin; a flax-mill hand, died suddenly at the Masonic Hotel this morning. Death is alleged to be due to a blow received in a fracas outside the hotel. A man named Patrick Murphy, a mate of the deceased, hse been arrested on a charge of manslaughter. Nicklin was formerly a ship's fireman. At the inquest to-day; the medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to fracture of the neck caused by a blow in the region of the larynx. Other evidence proved that Murphy struck deceased two blows under the ear, renderin-g Nicklin unconscious. After being picked up he gave no sign of life, death-being'instantaneous. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against Murphy.
Murphy has Since been committed for trial oil a charge of murder. The evidence went to show that the men had missed the train for Wellington. Nicklin reproached Murphy with being the cause, and some hot words ensued. Murphy then struck Nicklin twice, and the fatter fell down. He was taken into a hotel and attended to, but never recovered complete consciousness.
