BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.

Tho thirty-sixth annual report of the trustees of the Benevolent Institution, presented at tho annual meeting of subscribers, ja in the following terms: —

The total number of persons relieved during the year was 2289, a decrease of 523 on the previous year

The number of inmates on Ist January, 1898, was 231 lieu, 53 women, and 1 child;—total, 285.

Eeceived into the institution during the year: 156 men, 61 women, and 9 children; —total, 226, including 23 women admitted into the

lying-in ward. Discharged: 166 men, 58 women, and 9 children; —total, 233, leaving on 31st December, 1898, 221 men, 56 women, and 1 child; total, 278. Fifty-seven deaths occurred during the'year. The expenses of the institution amounted to £1171 Gs 2d. The expenses for maintenance amounted to £-iOI2 Gs—an increase on the previous year of £593 13s. The charges are for cost of food, clothing, fuel, house furnishings, salaries of master, matron, servants, and doctor, medicine, funerals, municipal rates, half office oxpenses, and all working expenses in connection with the institution. Tho weekly average was 287, as against 278 last year, which gives a charge of 5s 4Jd per ..head per week. . The amount disbursed on outdoor relief was £G3C9 17s od —an increase of £8 13s 7d on previous year. Thir includes' the payment of £110 5s Gd on account of children hoarded out. Tho total amount expended was £10,960 5s lid.
