ATTEMPTED- SUICIDE.
SWALLOWED MATCH-HEADS.
What appears to have been a'determined attempt to commit suicide took place in the north .end of the' city", on. the . 25th. - A married man, named John Watsbn,..who is 37 years of.age, anda labourer by occupation; on" returning home from his work appeared to be in adejected mood, and towards evening commenced-talking about doing away with himself. ■' Eventually he produced a couple of boxes of-matches, and in the presence of his /wife dissolved the match-heads in a clip containing water. .There was no one else in the. house at the time, and, Mrs Watson was groatly alarmed. - She was afraid to leave-her husband and run for assistance; and she made an attempt to get the' cup out of his hand, but Watson placed the cup to his lips 'and drank the greater portion of. the contents. Dr Macpherson was sent for,- but, unfortunately; thrcoquarters of an hour elapsed before he could arrive. He, however, with the aid of a .stomachpump, cleared the stomach as much as possible,. and then ordered the man's removal to the' Hospital. - No reason has-been advanced why he should have taken the poison beyond the fact that for some time past he; has. been queer.in his head and subject'to' delusions. He has a family of two children.''
