FIRES.
fPiSR United Phess Association.) Auckland, Septembsr 4. A two-storeyed hotel at Gumfcowa, Mercary Bay, was burned down test Sunday. Tfce firß originated in one of the lodgers' bedrooms through a lighfc. Nothing was saved, and the damage amounted fcp £1450. The hotel was j owned by Messrs Hancock and Co., and cccv- ' pied by Mr Michael O'Connor, while the f urnifcure and stock were the property of Mr James Macfarlane. The building was insured for , £1150 in the Commercial Uaion. At 10.45 on Saturday night a firs broke out in a house in Lees street, occupied by Mrs Macdonald. A window blind was discovered to be on fire, but some neighbours, effected a speedy, entranca and extinguished the flames before any great damage had been done. Ths Fire Brigade tamed out promptly. The origin of the fke is a mystery, as no one is known to have been ia the house since Friday night.
