A lire broke out during an artists' ball at Santarem, and caused a panic, dnring which many leaped from the windows. Many brave attempts were made to rescue the people in the burning bnildiEg, and in several cases tbe would-be rescneis were overtaken by tbe flames and perished. Forty-three corpses were found in the debris when the fire was extinguished.
