SUPPOSED CASE OF SUICIDE.
Auckland, February 3.
The death of E. S. Garland, of Maunk&u, undsr peculiar circumstances, is reported. About three months ago Garland was, it is said, suspected of having designs on his own life, and was accordingly examined by doctors, with a view to his being committed to the asylum, but the doctors did not consider themselves justified in ordering hid to be committed. Since then he hadbses attended by Dr Clouston, of Wainka, and a mta was employed to keep a watch over. him. It is said that on the 30th ult. he got a sleeping draught and next day he took an'overdose, whish caused his death about 2 p.m. Deceased is stated to have been the owner of considerable property in the Mauukau district, and. .is. supposed to have had an income of close on £2000 a year. He had no rektives in the colony, but leaves a wife and daughter living in England. At the inquest,' a verdict that deceased took an overdose of chloral while in a state of temporary insanity, was returned.
