A STEAMER GUTTED BY FIRE.

Wellington, Febrnary 8.

The steamer Waitapu, a well-known trader between Wellington and Patea, was completely gutted by fire on the patent slip early this morning. She was taken on the slip on Saturday last for repairs, rendered necessary thi'ough her rndder haviag been carried away when crossing the Patea bar. The outbreak of fire occurred in the forward part of the vessel, and almost immediately was followed by sq explosion, the cause of which is. cot clear. When it was seen that there was no chanca or saving the Wait&pu, she was run down into the water; but by that time almost the whole of the woodwork was burnt. It is believed that the explosion was caused by rockets which were stored in the forward part of the veesol. . Mr J. S. Croas, the owner, valued tha vessel at £1700. She was insured for £750 in the Alliauce. Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire.
