" Sir,—ln accordance with the promise made to you and to Messrs Hutchison, Morrison, and Millar, MH.R'a., I have now the honour to hand you herewith a statement showing the' expenditure on that railway during the late financial year, together with the liabilities existing at the close of the year. As the vote taken for railways each year is to cover expenditure up to the end of Jane in the following year, I also send you a statement showing the expenditure and liabilities incurred ng to that date.' For.the purpose of comparison I also enclose a statement showing the amount appropriated and . expended on the construction of each of the following railways—viz, Eketahuna- Woodville, Otago Central, Catlin's Biver, and Seaward Baeh,—fcom which you will observe that the expenditure on the Otago Central railway is at least as large in proportion as the expenditure on either of the other lines referred to.
