EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS.

The quarterly returns of attendance for tlie period ended JSlrt Decemlicr 1884, which bavc been compiled by the secretary to the Otago Education Board, show that there were 208 schools m operation in the district, employing 217 male aod 282 female teachers, besides 2(i teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the school rolls at the beginning of the quarter wai 22,120, and at the end of the quarter 22,555, comprising 11,729 hoys and 10,826 girls. The working average was 11,312 boys and 9442 girls, makine a total of 19,754; being {305 more than the total for the previous quarter, and 887 more than that for the corresponding quarter of 1893. The strict average was 87 less than the working average—viz., 19,087; being an increase of 672 on the atrict averace for the previous quarter, 3nd an increase of 1)13 on that for the corresponding quarter of 18!)3. The strict average attendance for the quarter just closed has been exceeded but once, and that by only 73—viz., in tha quarter ended 31st December 188H, when tlie total reached 19.76U The averages in tho Dunedin and suburban schools were: Kaikorai 771, Albany street 718, George street 699, Normal 644, High street 635, Oa-versham 532, Union street 531, Macandrew road 523, Arthur street 514, Fnrbury 5112, JMorth-fiast Valloy 479, Mornington 467, Kensington 3G9, Ravensbourne 213, Anderson's Bay 119. The averages at Oamaru were: North School 400, South 389. Middle 363. At the district high schools: Port Chalmers 508, Tokomairiro 29S>, Palmewton 263, Lawrence 247, Balclutha 203.
