OUR VOLUNTEERS.
Tho members of the Dunedin Naval Artillery and Band assembled st a smoke concert on Thursday evening last, at the invitation cf Lieutenant-commanding Allen, the occasion bsiog the opening of the corps's new orderly and band room in Stuart street, when about 80 of the corps and band sat down to the good things provided. After the usual royal toasts had bsen honoured, Lieutenant-commanding Alien, in declaring the room open, said that bafore they proceeded to harmony he could not let the evening psss without asking the company to drink tho health of Mr James Hislop, the hon. architect, who had so kindly given his services gratis to the corp3 in tho erection of the room. After this toast had been drank with musical honours, Mr Hislop, in reply, said that any little thing like this thafc he could assisfc the corps in he would be most happy in doing. A word of praisß, he said, was also due to the contractor, Mr J. Thorn, for the way he had carried out his work, nofc a single hitch occurring between bim (the architect) and Mr Thorn. Song:', recitation;, and dauces were given by tbo vark-us members of the c;-rps and band, the band alao contributing three selections during tha evening. The company disperse! at 11 3J, well pleased with the evening's enjoyment.
