dunedin boating CLUIi,

A largely-attended meetiug of the Dunedin Boating Club was held in the Excelsior Hotel last evening to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement of Mr AY. J. MacLaughlin (captain) and Mr A. Purdie (member of the committee). Mr MacLaughlin, in proposing Mr James (the present deputy-captain) for the senior position, spoke highly of the energetic and enthusiastic manner iv which the latter had discharged his duties, and the support accorded himself by Mr James and the other office-bearers. On being put to the meeting Mr James was unanimously elected amidst continued cheering. Mr AY. J. Strong, upon being proposed for the deputy-captainship, was also accorded an enthusiastic reception, and he was elected by acclammation.

Mr God ward was elected to the vacant position on the committee caused by Mr Purdie's retirement

On the motion of Mr MacLaughlin a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Purdie for his valuable services in connection with the founding of the club, and wishing him every success in his new sphere. After the election of officers had taken place, the Chairman (Mr L. O. Beal, jun.) said he had a very pleasing duty to perform—namely, to present the retiring captain, Mr W. J. MacLaughlin, with a handsome silver hunting watch and chain suitably inscribed. In doing so Mr Beal spoke of the many good qualities of Mr MacLaughlin, and said he was an organL ,er °i-_ f flrst water' Mr MacLaughlin had been the founder of the present champion football team of the South Island-th'e Alhambra I'ootball Club—and had successfully started the Uunedm Amateur Boating Club. He was sure not only the members of the Rowing Club, but the many other institutions he had been connected with, would miss Mr MacLaughlin's valuable services. He was glad a club of this kind had been started, for its membership was open to all young men. The tradespeople had the bone and muscle, and to this fact the young club partly owed its success at the late Port regatta, winning no legs than four races out of live. He concluded by wishing Mr MacLaughlin | every success m his new sphere at Invercargill, and was sure he would be as energetic there as he had been here. He would be glad to hear of him still further encouraging rowing down !?_. _, cc rmfiin& cheers, concluding with "For hes a jolly good fellow," were then given.

Mr MacLaughlin, in responding, thanked the members for the very handsome present, and spoke of the pleasant relations existing between himself and the members of the club. He bespoke the same courtesy and support for his successor. He wished the club every luck, and trusted they would continue on a prosperous career. r

Mr Hooper proposed the health of the visitors, which was responded to by Mr Melville, captain of the Dunedin Cycling Club, on behalf of the other visitors. Songs and recitations by the members, and a vote of thanks to the chair, with three cheers to Miss Smithson for her many little kindnesses to the club concluded a pleasant evening
