SBWS, GOSSIP, AND ,i?>3

The gale of the past two days appears to have blown itself out.

The £25 prize offered by the Reef ton Jockey Club for the best design for a grand stand was awarded to Mr Petre, Dunedin. The cost of the stend is about £900. The City Hall is to ba reopened as a skating rink for a short season. Friday and Saturday nights have been selected as the opening nights, and there will be a special session on Saturday afternoons. The Mokau coal trade is (says the Tsranaki Herald) developing steadily, inasmuch as there are now three steamers running to Waitara engaged in the trade—namely, the Waitara, Mohaka, and Manaia. The year 1900 will not be a leap year, for the reason 'hat Pope Gregory in constructing the calendar now in use ordered that all cental years not being multiples of 400 should not be leap years. Omitting three leap years in every 400 operates to nearly reconcile the civil and solar years. A painful history attaches to the history of Mr James Struthers Williams, whose death was announced last week. He came to Canterbury with his family, in the Randolph, one of the historical first four ships, arriving in Lyttelton on December 16, 1850, and his father was the first of the pilgrims to die in the eolany. Walking over the hill four days after the arrival of the ship in Lyttelton he died on the way, from .the same complaint that has now cut short the life of his son. Messrs F. Howell and Co.'s action in securing a showroom in a central position (next City Hotel, Princes' street), would have been justifiable had it beeD taken merely to exhibit their "English Model Piano." The term "English model" signifies a class of piano specially manufactured by their firm for the purpose of supplying the local demand for a first-class instrument at a reasonable price; and as it combines all the most recent patents and improvements contained in European made instruments, it can honestly be compared with the best English and German pianos selling at from 50 guineas upwards. The price of the " English Model "is only 40 guineas, and intending purchasers are invited to inspect and criticise the tone and touch, which are simply exquisite. This piano is guaranteed for six years, and to judge from the flattering testimonials will become the favourite instrument throughout Otago. Easy terms of purchase arranged.: After lessons were concluded at the Cargill road Wesleyan Sunday School on Sunday afternoon, Mr Albert Beck, who retired from the superintendency a few weeks ago, was presented with a handsome album from the scholars as a memento of their esteem and lovo. Mr W. Bennett, in making the presentation, stated that Mr Beck was the originator of the school over 10 years ago, and it was mainly due to his enthusiasm and love of the work that the school was now in euch a prosperous condition. Mr Beck feeliDgly responded, thanking the scholars heartily for their beautiful gift, assuring them that the 10 years spent amongst them had been very pleasant and profitable to himself, and that the many happy hours they hud together would be among his pleasantest reminiscences, DHAP FORTY XBAKS.
