MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The Cargill road Mutual Improvement Class met as usual on Wednesday evening. Mr S. Bridgman occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members and friends. The Eev. W. Baumber delivered an instructive and interesting lecture on hia recent trip to Sydney, particularly mentioning his rambles among the beautiful scenery of the Blue Mountains, which after all, he said, wan not to be compared to our Hew Zealand scenery. On the motion of Mr Cole, seconded by Mr Metz, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the rev. lecturer.
Mr J. O. Toild occupied the chair at the meeting of the John street (Caversham) Mutual Improvement Olas9, when Mr Abernethy gave an excellent essay on the late exhibition. There was a fair attendance of members.
The weekly meeting of the Trinity Mußlcal and Literary Society was hold on Thursday evening, when the debate on the question "Are Trades Unions Beneficial? " was concluded. After the chairman's remarks, a vote was taken, which resulted In a victory for the negative side by one vote. The following items were contributed during the evening:—Piano solo by Miss Taylor, reading by Miss Christie, song by Mr Smith, and a duet (piano and violin) by Mlsb Marsden'and Mr Ooombß. There was a very large attendance.
