ARTHUR STREET SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Arthur street School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Sligo, Burt, Crawford, M'Gregor, Leslie, and Captain Orkney. Mr Alexander Sligo in the chair.—An estimate was submitted of the cost of the improvements to the playgrounds contemplated by the committee; but as the estimate wns largely in excess of the funds available, it was resolved that application be made to the Education Board for assistance, as part of the work must be regarded as a permanent improvement to the property.—The honorary treasurer (Mr Burt) submitted his statement of accounts for the year, from which it appeared tust the income was £135 and the expenditure £112 Ms Sd, and that the balance in hand amounted to £70 os. The statement having been examined was found correct, and the treasurer thanked for the satisfactory position of affairs.—The Head Master reported the state of the school for the quarter ended December 23 to be as follows .-—Number on register: '101 boys, 312 girls; iatal, 743. Average attendance : 370 boys, 303 girls; total, 073. The Head Master also reported that the sum collected by the school children for the improvement of the grounds amounted to £10 10s 2d, and enclosed cheque for same.—A circular was received from the Education Board directing the committee to forward annual statement of accounts to the board's oflice before the 15th inst. Also, a notification that the existiug scale cf payments to committees will bo revised, with a view to their reduction, after Ist April ISSS. Also, a circular intimating that Dr Brown and Messrs Fruser and Fraer retire from the board this year, and requesting the committee to nominate two members before the 31st inst.—A letter was read from Mr Fraer, Lawrence, requesting nomination as a member of the Education Board, and laying stress on the long and faithful services he has given to the cause of education in this district.—The Chairman intimated that a conference of schools committees would be held soon, and that the nomination of members to the Education Board would be taken into consideration thereat.—lt was resolved that the chairman and secretary attend the conference,

if called. —It was also resolved that a special meeting be called-for Friday, the 20th inst., to cousider reply of Education Board to application for assistance. —Accounts amounting to £2 lls 3d we're passed for paymi-nt, and a sum was voted to the caretaker for the improvement of his residence.
