THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE.

A DANGEROUS WEAPON.

That the Remington-Lee rifle is a dangerous weapon to fire with is every day becoming more apparent. Yesterday there were two narrow escapes from serious accidents, one at Dunedin and ths other at Oamaru. At Dunedin, Vo>, Fredric, of the City Guards, was practising at the Pelichet Bay range with one of the»e rifles. One of the cartridges broke, and the force of the explosion was in the direction of the butt of the rillo. The breech working was almost completely destroyed, being bent and rendered useless. Vol. Fredric had a very narrow escape. The gas and smoke was blown into his face, and his eye slightly injured by the fire. It was perhaps fortunate for him that he had his thumb upon the breech action, as it is more than probable that he was thus saved from serious injury by the breech being blown back. It may be stated that four other cartridges before this one had broken, so that it is not only the workmanship of the breech that is bad, but also the ammunition.
