BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.

A meeting of the trustees nf the Benevolent Institution was helil yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs Solomon (chairman), Barnes, Calder, Gourley, Fagan, Carroll, and Rennio.

The Glcnore School Coinniitece forwarded £3 2s, the result of a service of song hi Id under their auspices. They regretted that the contribution fell so far short if the requirements. Tho School Committee of Clark's Flat torwarded £2 13s as the proceeds oi a dance. Thoy also regretted that Hie amount, was so small, but the weather was bad and the mode of support was the only one appreciated in country places. An opinion of Messrs t(. and J. A. Cook was read on the question whether the inmates of the Benevolent Institution had the right to vote at elections of members of Parliament, and if so whether thn trustees were at liberty to interfere with or restrain the inmates from attending at the polling place to record their votes, 'the opinion was to the effect that tho inmates or flic institution clearly were entitled to vote in respect of their residential qualification, and were entitled to bave their names placed ou the roll, and the trustees had no right to interfere with or ju'event them from recording their votes.
