WEST HAEBOUR BOEOUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night. Present—The mayor (Mr Young), Crs Albery, Bennett, Binn, Bolton, Ross, Barclay, Walker, M'Millan, and Maurais. COEEBSPONDENCB. A letter was nad from Thomas C. de Lacy stating that he understood on inquiry that the council had granted permission to a railway official to sbif t the railway fence to land forming the Road Reserve of the borough without first having obtained a distinct guarantee from the Miiister of Public Works disclaiming any present or public control over the same. He protest* j against such on encroachment without such guarantee, and maintained that it was the duty of the council to protect the interests of theboiough.—Received. Circulars were read from P. Black, secretary to the Otago District Hospital Board, giving notice of the annual meeting of the board, ana ask ng the town clerk to notify the same to the representatives of the borough.—Received. A letter was road from B. J. Mitchell asking the council to remit half hie rates, he not being ia a position to pay.—Granted. Alexander M'Kenzie wrote asking a settlement of his account, with interest on dishonoured cheques.—lt was. resolved that the applicant meet the council in committee with a view to a settlement.

Henrietta B. ll'Neill wrote stating that some time ago a contractor under the corporation damaged her property by cutting down some trees and shrubs and removing a quantity of earth for the purpose of repairing the road between the railway station and Eoseneath. A reasonable time had been allowed to elapse so that the clerk should have time to bring the matter before the council, in order that the council might take steps to repair the damage. Having no intimation of the town clerk having done so, she requested the council to repair the damage at once; failing which, proceedings would be taken.—Received.

Messrs'Webb. and Leggett's account for £15 10s was passed and ordered to be paid.
