COMMERCIAL.

Daily Times Office, Saturday evening. The amount of customs revenue received today on goods cleared for consumption was £309 "s 7d. The beer duty amounted to £11 13s 6d. The revenue collected at the Dunedin Custom House during the past week ou goods cleared for consumption amounted to -64398 17s Gd. The beer duty amounted to £227 3s lOd, and the gold duty to £157 9s 2d. ■ ' m There is nothing of interest to report concerning the import market beyond the arrival of a cargo of Mauritius sugar, also a parcel of very toe Japan dressed rice. The cargo of sugar is to be offered by auction on Monday, but we fear the importers will not feel disposed to sell at the present ruling prices. The quality is very superior and well assorted. In tea there is a fair demand, and a good many moderately-Bized parcels have been sold during the week. Importers are not heavily stocked, but we understand there are several shipments now on the way from China, transhipping at Sydney. Candles are a very unsatisfactory line just now, the local and imported article being iv competition, and it is difficult to give quotations. Dried fruits are finding more favour, and really good samples meet with ready sale. Currants, 5d per lb for parcels; Elemes, 6d per lb; Sultanas, 6d per lb. The market is a little overstocked with inferior qualities. In salmon the quotations remain the same for the favourite brands. There was a line of 100 cases "steamer " brand changed hands at 8s per dozen. ' In bagging there is very little doing. Woolpacks a*e selling at 2s -Id to 2s 6d, but no sales of cornsacks have come under our notice. We have no advice of the s.s. Triumph having left Calcutta. Cement and galvanised iron are moving in trade parcels. The former may be quoted at ' 14s 3d to 14s 6d, and the latter at £18 10s for good brands. Tobacco is in fair demand, and favourable prices are being obtained by importers. There aro sevoral good shipments at present on the market. Wo also note anew industry springing up in our midst in the shape of a Chinese tobacco manufactory. The factory is now in operation in Walker street, and we understand the raw material is being largely cultivated in the Queenstown district. Table rice is overstocked at the present time, and the price a shade lower, and the advices lead us to believe there is a considerable quantity coming forward. The Japan rice appears to be getting a good hold of this market, which it well deserves, being of a very superior quality. Raw and boiled oils are slow of sale, and prices are in favour of buyers. Kerosene also is selling at a shade lower, and tho sales have been small during the week. The Crystal brand appears to have the attention of the trade, the quality beingequal to other brands offering and the price for parcels in favour of buyers. Stocks are heavy for this season of the year.

Golilsbrough's Circular, dated Sydney, November 1, contains the following information :— Wool.—Since tbe opening of the season, on September 24,20,310 bales have been offered in this market, of which 18,467 have been sold, as against 11.178 bales offered and 3893 sold to a cwreepcmdiug date in 1885 The increase in

favour of "the present season is owing partly to the sales opening three weeks earlier this year than last, as woll as to the iucreasod inclination on tho part of owners to realise in the local j market.
