THE GAMING AND LOTTERIES ACT.
A POLICE RAID IN WELLINGTON,

Wellington, May 27,
This afternoon the detectives made a raid on a tobaconist'a shop in Willis Btreet,'and seized a number of artioles which tbey allege were being used on the principle of a totalisator, and that theinvostraenta were ontheGrand National Steeplechase and Hurdle Race at Christchurcb. Among the articles seized were two large Bheetß of cardboard, on which were the name of the race and the horsea engaged in it, while under the name of the racehorse was the number of investors on that particular horse, tbe total number of investors on each race being at tbe top of the sheet. Indiarubber stamps, a number of tickets bearing horseß' nameß, and about £50 in cheques and notes were also taken possession of. Tbe names of all persons in tbe ahop" were taken, and it is understood that tbe police will lay an information under tbe Gaming and Lotteries' Act against -Mr Mandell, wbo occupies the premises,
