ATHLETICS.
TO THK EDITOR. Sm,-Having accepted the challenge Issued in public by Joe Scott at the Garrison Hall, after (ho conclusion o! the Scott v. Haioock 12-houra walk, to meet me 24 or 48 hours, and having met with no reply, my backer, Mr Harris, called on Mr Austin this morning in Older to see if they were prepared to make a match lor 24 hours for £100 a Bide, ti whi'.h he received the following reply: That they would n»ke the match, but would require three months from date of signing article) bsfore the match would come ofl, and having been openly challenged last evening by one of Scott's bickers, Mr M'Oralh, for 24 hours for £100 a side, winner to take all the gjte-money and stakes, which terms I am willing to cmcede to, I fall to see why they Bhould r. quire such a long time, as both myself and Scott have been in active training for some time past, unless it may be for the following reasons—namely, that their intentions are to induc9 lome more English pedestrians from the other side the water to come here; thus they are afraid to match Scott against me, as, In tho event of my beating him, it would probably upset their, future plans, and a3 they will not moot me on any reasonable terms whatsoever, I cannot see how Scott any longer can cl.im the championship of New Zealand; and until he does moot me, and beats me, I will consider mysolf a superior man to him, and I am now perfectly satisfied that Austin does not require a bona fide mitcn: and they require to go no farther than Australia to got accommodated at any distance from 12 hours up to six days and nights by either myself or W. Harris, from £100 upwards. May I also teke the liberty to exrre'S my thanks to those gentlemen who kindly proiniEOd to support me had a match been made.-1 am, 40., jj^^ Champion Long-distance Walker of Australasia. March 8.
