SILVERSTREAM WATER SUPPLY.
TO TUB KDITOR.
Sir,—A paragraph appears in your columns of to-day, copied from the Taier! Advocate, in which it U stated that rotting rabbits had been lying in the Silvcrstream-Water-race. I think— nay, lam sure—your Taierl . contemporary has found, or has supposed himiclf to have found, a mare's neat. I was all along the race last Saturday, and there waa nothing of the kind there tiien ; 1 was again along on Monday, and there was nothing of the kind there then; 1 have been along tlie race to-day, and there is nothing of the kind there now. It would be impossible to prevent evillydisposed persons throwing offensive n.atter into tho race ; but I am habitually along, and narrowly examine the race several times a week, and any such matter would be seen and removed nithin a few hours either by the surfaceman or myself. 1 have questioned the surfaceman, and ho emphatically denies tho truth ot the assertion made by the Advocate. The race haa boon twice brushed down for six miles of its course during the last munth, the portion referred to being included in tho six miles. To conclude, there ha§ been no water supplied to Dunedin from that portion of the race during the last five weeks.—l am, 4e.," Archibald Sliqo, Inspector Silverstream Water-race. Dunedin, August 18th.
