THE VOLUNTEERS.

The eighth competition of the Wakari Rangers for the Challenge Cup presented to them by Mr Henry Driver, took place on Saturday, the 2lith ult., on the Company's range. The winner on the present occasion is Ensign Mackenzie, with the fine total score of 70 points. The cup has now been won three times by Lieut. Marshall, twice by Vol. W, Lacey, twice by Ensign Mackenzie, and once by Vol. A. Frazor. The morning was very line, there was a slight wind from the front, but it did not materially appear to affect the shooting. The conditions were : —Ranges— 400, 500, and 000 yards, pevon shots at each range, any position. The Cup must be won five times before becoming the property of any one. In addition to tho Cup, there were live ammunition prizes, tho five highest scorers being prize-takers. Tho following are the scores : —

A meeting of the South District Rifle Rangers was held in the Drill Shed, Green Island, last Wednesday, the 23rd ult., for the purpoae of nominating officers, and swearing in the new members of the Company. After inspection by Major Atkinson, 33 new members were Bworn in, and 18 old members re-enrolled. The nomination of officers was then proceeded with. Captain, Mr J. Roberts, of Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. ; Lieutenant, Win. Shand ; Sub-Lieuten-ant. J. J. Eagerty ; Hon. Sec, W. A. Fassier ; Treasurer, Chas. Sampson ; Bugler, R. Rcnwick. There were eight nominees for non-commissions, who will bo elected on the next monthly inspection by Major Atkinson. The total strength of the Company now numbers 51 members. There is a great contrast in the energy shown by both officers and men to the lassitude wh eh hitherto prevailed in Green Island. The uniform decided on is grey tunic and trowsers. Tho Artillery Company recently fired two rifle matches, one against the 14th Middlesex Rifles, and the other a return match, against the Bank of England Rifle Association. Both were shot upon the same conditions —viz., 7 shots at ranges of 200, 500, and GOO yards ; Wimbledon targets and position, Government rifles, ammunition, &c. Tho scores; of the home team in the match with the 14th Middlesex have not yet arrived. In the second match the scores are to hand, showing the A.-tillery to be victorious by iBO points. The weather on both occasions was very good, and higher tota's were expected from the winning team. The highest scorer in both matches is Lieutenant Muir with 61 and 64, closely followed by Gunner Cato with 60 and 61; and Sergeant Peck, for the Bankersj leads their team with 55.
