B. H. RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

44J0 We hear that the Artillery have challenged their "brethren of the big guns" at Christchnrch to a trial of skill with the rifle, and that their match with the A Company of the famous London Scottish will be fired in a few days. As the latter is one of the best shooting companies in England, and shoot with the Snider, this match is looked forward to with someinterest in shooting circles. Volunteering in Otago has its laughter provoking side. Our Hampden correspondent writes: —"The Hampdeu Volunteers chased by a Bullock.—-Respecting this event, which came off at Hampden a short time since, I find representations have been made not strictly in accordance with the circumstances- It appears the situation occupied by the force at tho time of attack really was on the wrong side of the fence. The place was most exposed, and, as a military position, simply untenable. It would therefore seem the precipitate fall back of thn party upon the right side of the fence was a movement dictated by the highest strategical considerations. Whether the members of the corps become eminent as shots or not, one thing is certain, as competitoi-s for the prize awarded by tho Caledonian Society for running high leap few would stand a chanco with them."

A rifle contest between the North Dunedin Rifles and the Port Chalmers Naval Company took place on Tuesday morning, the sth inst., tho Riiles firing at Pdichet Bay Range, and the Naval Company at Sawyer's Bay. Tho distances were 200, 500, and 000 yards ; standing position at 200 yards, and any at 500 and <XX) yar.'s ; Wimbledon targets ; no sighting shots. P. O. Wilson—one of the best marksmen in the Port team—who was to have tired at Pelichet Bay, did not do so, in consequence* of not getting his rifle in time. The firing was under the superintendence of Captain Robertson at Sawyer's Bay, and of Lieutenant Loary at Pelichet Bay. As will be seen from tho scores, the result was in favour of tho Rifles :—

Tho Port Naval Cadet?, on an afternoon lately, mustered in force with their little breech loaders, adjacent to Dodsoii'b Bonded Store. Major Bathgate and Mr Dillon Bell, who were at the time about to leave by the train for Dimedin, seemed highly pleased with tho appearance of the lads, who, under Captain Robertson, went through several evolutions. Major and Adjutant Atkinson, through detention of the Steamer Golden Age, from Duncdin, could not bo present till after the parade. In tho evening the Adjutant inspected the Company, and fines were inilicted on those who did not attend. The Dido, 11.M.5., 8 guns, is shortly expected to arrive here, when it in expected that the several Naval Companies of the Province will receive instruction on board.
