STATISTICAL.

During the month of October there were 83 births registered in Dunedin. The number of deaths registered was 41, which is an unusually high figure. Notwithstanding this, however, the excess of :irtlis over deaths was at the rate of 102.43 per cent. The number of marriages registered during the month was 17. The amount of revenue collected at the Custom House, Dunedin, during the month ending 31st October, was as follows: - Spirits, £503410» 6d ; do, New Zealand, £840 Is 5d ; wine, £849 3s 5d ; ale and beer, £572 0s 2d ; tobacco, £2058 10s 6d; cigars and snuff, £132 17s 6d ; opium, £98 ; 'ad valorem, £113 • tea, £1684 5s 3d ; coffee, cocoa, chicory, chocolate, £283 7s 3d ; sugar, £1911 10s 3d ; powder, £2 10a; goods by measurement, £5272 14» 7s ; do by weight, £204119s 9d ; sundries, £695 Os lid ; total, £21,505 11s 6d. lievenue on gold, £794 3s Id.

The number of police cases in Otago during the month of October was 158, the proportions of the sexes of the persons charged being—Males, 132 ; females, 20. Drunkenness was the most frequent offence, 03 mules and 5 females being charged with it. Next in order of number come the neglected and criminal children, 10 boys and 2 girls being charged with thin misfortune. 5 males and 6 females were charged with obscene language, and 6 males and 5 females with disorderly conduct. The charges of lunacy amounted to 10, only 1 being a«ainst a woman. There were 8 breaches of the peace, .ill by men, and 7 cases of larceny—viz., 5 males and 2 females. 1 female was also charged with larceny as a bailee, and 4 males with larceny from dwellings. Of the remaining charges we need only particularise 1 for murder, against a woman; and 3 for attempted suicide, all being men. 1 " man," also, was charged with wife-desertion.

During the month of October there were 14 days on which rain fell in Dunedin, the total rainfall being 2.252 inches, and tho greatest rainfall in one day .'.V.)2 inch on the 17th. The mean daily velocity of the wind was 154 miles, the greateat velocity observed for 24 hours being 430 miles on the 24th. The telegraphist reported a magnetic storm, commencing on the 15th, and magnificent Auroras occurred on the nights of the 17th and 18th. Thunder was heard on the 17th and 28th, and hail fell on the 28th. The highest maximum temperature registered in the shade was 73 degrees on the 24th ; and lowest minimum temperature 34 degrees on the Bth, giving an extreme range for tho month of 31) degrees. The mean daily range was 17. G degrees, and the approximate mean temperature for the month 51.2 degrees. Tho barometrical observations show tho highest atmospheric pressure to havo been 30.234 inches on the 7th, and tho lowest 22.2f)() inches on the Ist, giving a range for the month of .044 inch. The mean atmospheric pressure during that period was 29.802 inches.
