Sir—ln .reply to "Edinburgh" of Friday's issue, ** as to who gave authority to; run up the Royal Standard half-mast high on the occasion of Dr Burns'faneral." If" Edinburgh " alludes to my flag pole, I" gave authority^ a tribute of respeot to, the -departed father of the province ; an honour ;our beloved Queen would have felt proud, had she been asked, to have conceded to the memory of the veherable Doctor: Haying no wish to open up the question as to whether the same rule applies to public and private buildings as to vessels afloat, I will not attempt to discuss it at present; but think "Edinburgh" must have little to do to find fault, under the circumstances, with : auch a public recogait'on —I am, &c, KoyALjPoRT of Leith.
