IN MEMORIAM.

William Henry Stock, of Oamaru, who gave his life for his country at Charlestown, on 9th January, 1901, while engaged in the South African War. He is sleeping, sweetly sleeping, Far away on Afric's shore; And our eyes are dim with weeping That we see his face no more; But in calm submission bending, We would bow to Him Who gave : God, Whose love is never ending, Watches o'er our soldier's grave. When our loved ones shall awaken In His likeness with the blest, And our souls their flight have taken To the heavenly land of rest: Oh! the rapture to receive thee From the hands of -Him who gave— Then our boy in peace we leave thee, Sleeping in a soldier's grave. But the tears will flow unbidden, Yearning for another smile From the dear face that is hidden— Hidden, for a little while. Stranger Bands may kindly gather Flowers to deck, or grass may wave : Does it matter? God, our Father, Guards above our soldier's grave. Ah ! we miss thee in the morning, When the golden days begin; And we miss thee in the evening, When the shadows gather in : Never will He elude us, never— Though we weep, 'twas God who gave : He is keeping watch for ever O'er our soldier's grave. . On a slope beneath the mountains, Far away in Charlestown, When the weary march was ended, There they laid our soldier down; Far from home and all his kindred, He is resting with the brave, Who sleep their long and dreamless sleep Within a soldier's grave. ■K. R. Oamaru, January Bth, 1903.
