The new duties came as a surprise to commercial circles, but were generally well received in the Assembly. Mr Lyne said that he would oppose the tea duty, but could say nothing against the others, which were an unauthorised appropriation of his own policy. If Mr Reid chose to be a Protectionist, so much the better for the Opposition so much the worse for the Premier's previous professions. Daring her cruise the Mlldura visited Lopier Island, the scene of the severe eruptions on July 23. The eruptions destroyed all vegetation, wrecked native villages, and the inhabitants had to flee for their lives. A stream of lava 200 feet wide reached the sea.
