THE NEW SOUTH WALES BUDGET.

In the Assembly Mr Reid delivered his Budget. The revenue for the year was L 9,482,000, being L 245.000 above the estimate. The principal increases were : Land, L 93.000 ; railways, L 61.000 ; post office, L 15.000; Cnstoms, L 57.000. The actual expenditure was L 9,475,000, being L 83.000 above the estimate. It will be necessary to increase the expenditure this year under the various heads. _ The estiu mates require L 9,618.000, while the re B venue could only be estimated at L 9,435,000, therefore he was regretfully compelled to increase taxation. He intended to reintroduce the measure doubling the probate duty, which the Legislative Council rejected last session. The balance would be obtained by the imposition of 3d per lb on tea, the retention of the duty on chicory, coffee, and cocoa, and the imposition of L 3 per ton on rice. The duty on sugar would be retained, while the articles in manufacture for which sugar is used, such as biscuits, jams, bottled fruits, confectionery, and preserves will pay the ~ duties enforced prior to June. The Premier declared that but for the bad seasons it would have been absolutely unnecessary to impose increased taxation. He had selected duties which would - nob confuse the Federal question. It was his deliberate belief that Federation would be accomplished wltohin 12 months.
