The Rifle Association Meeting.

(by telegraph. ) 'Trentham, March 19. In the afternoon the Colonial Ammunition Match, 10 shots at 500 yards, was fired for a sweepstake, arranged by the men themselves. G. Loveday (Woodvine) and W. Smith (Southland) each made 49 (within one of the possible); M'Kay (Christchurch), 48 ; White (Auckland;, Trooper Sommerville (Wanganui), Greenwood (Upper Hutt), 47. The men speak highly of the ammunition, and consider it" equal to Kynoch's, _ but say it appears to be stronger, requiring a lower elevation. The Grand Aggregate Match, at 500, 600, and 700 yards, was then fired. At 500 Scott again made the possible, and Steadman also made the possible at 600 yards. Richardson also made the possible. Lieutenant Kirk was second with 214. March 20. It is generally admitted that the shooting yesterday was a record for any Association meeting, and there is little doubt but the majority found the company a bit too hot. Firing began at 6.30 this morning with a dull light and a light breeze from the left. The Markers' Match, 10 shots at 500 yds, was first disposed of; Lance-Corporal Jenkins (Wellington City Rifles), who was second in the match at Christchurch last year, won with 44. The tie between Sergeant Mooseman and Yolunteer Scott (Feilding) for the Carbine Cup, as the highest aggregates in the Auckland and Ladies matches, was then shot, the conditions being five shots at 300 yds, and another tie resulted, each making 18. In the next shot Mooseman scored an inner against Scott's outer, and holds the cup. After breakfast the men paraded for the Last Try Match, but there was little interest in it as all interest centred in the championship. If " possible " prizes are to be continued a distinction should, so far as regards prizes, be made between pessibles in seven shot matches and 10 shot matches.
