The Rifle Association Meeting.

(by telegraph.) Thentham, March 18. The following is the result of the Companies' Teams Match:— PetoDe Rifles Club, L3O 448 Wanganui City Rifles, Lls ... ... 440 Wellington City Rifles, LlO .„ ... 434 A Battery, L 5 ,~ 431 The other scores were : Reserve Corps, Christchurch ... ... 430 Upper Hurt ifle Club 422 Woodville Rifle Club 422 Marton Rifle Club 401 Waipukurau Rifle Club ... 392 Southland Rifle Club ... .„ ... 388 New Plymouth Rifle Club 383 Reserve Corps, Christchurch 372 At the annual meeting of the Association a large number of members were present. Major Sommerville presided. The following members of the Council were elected .-—Oamaru, Captain Creagh ; Dunedin, Captain Proudfoot ; South Canterbury, Lieutant Whitehead; Wairarapa, Mr H. S. Izard; Nelson, Mr Rowell; Southland, Mr W. Smith; Hawkes Bay, Mr F. Williams; New Plymouth, Mr W. Humphries; Wanganui, Lieut. Hughes; Marlborough, Lieut. Salmon ; Christchurch, Captain Harman ; Auckland, Lieut. White; Wellington, Lieut. Kirk.

Major Sommerville briefly explained the position, combating the Government's statement that the Association was of no use to Volunteering, and subversive of dis3ipline. He had hopes that the deputation to wait on the Defence Department on Thursday would result satisfactorily, and that the Government grant would b« con inued. The meeting decided to hold the next meeting at Oamaru about the middle of February. Trentham, March 19. The weather is again fine for the shooting, there being a light breeze from the left with a dull light, and at the 500 yards of the Wellington Match the firing was an improvement on the previous days.' The shooting was particularly warm at 500 yards this morning, and it is rather unfortunate for the Association that they should have initiated prizes for possibles at a meetiug when funds were at a lower ebb than in the history of the Institution, as already nine possibles have been registered, for which L2 each has to be paid. At this range four possibles were put on by Sergeant Wakelyn, Christchurch ; Corporal Simpson, Kaiapoi; J. Burns, Karori; and W. B. Scott, Christchurch ; while Sergeant Mooseman, Wanganui; Greenwood, Hutt; Captain Smith, Dunedin; and M'Kay, Christchurch ; were within one of the major score.

At 600 yards some good scores were made, and Sergeant Wakelyn narrowly escaped another possible, making six bulls and the other was only an inch off. Other good scores were made by Captain Smith, Dunedin; Bannerman, Southland j Doughty, Auckland ; Richardson, Dunedin ; Burns, Dunedin ; M'Kay, Christchurch 33. Afc the conclusion of the range Wakelyn had the fine score of 69 outof 70, M'Kay next with 67, then came Bannerman 64, Captain Smith, Kirk, and Richardson 63.

At the conclusion of 600 yards a sharp shower fell but it is not likely to affect the shooting.

At 700 yds there were again good scores, and Wakelyn, finishing with 30, wound up with the excellent score of 99 out of a possible 105. It was fortunate for Wakelyn that a shot which he placed on the wrong target was one of his sighters, the first of which was a " bull," and the second an inner as mentioned on the target next his. Captain Smith, Dunedin, was 95 with a shot to go, and great interest was taken as to whether he could pass the redoubtable Canterbury crack. But this was not to be, as he had a cartridge which turned out to be a whistler; but he proved to be a worthy runner-up to the chief prizetaker. Doughty, who came back from 600 yds with 64, got on 30, and finished a good third, Bannerman, of Southland, put on 93. Willoughby was the highest scorer at this range with 33 six bulls and a magpie. Other good scores were: Robertson (Tuapeka) 31, France (Karori) 31, Doughty (Auckland) 30, Guise (Wellington), 30, M'Nab | (Invercargill) 30.
