(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. January 1. New Year's Eve passed off quietly and with but little display. Heavy rain fell this morning, bat cleared, and the weather became fine, but with a cold southerly wind.

The Hioemoa will probably leave here about Sunday with Sir Julius Vogel, who intends paying a visit to the Waiwera Hot Springs. A fire broke out last night in a honse situated in Newtown, and occupied by Mr Phi Hips. The Fire Brigade extinguished the fire before much damage was done.

Two vehicles collided on the Island Bay road this afternoon, and the occupants were thrown out. A Mrs Susan Davis had her thigh fractured in three places. J. Hutchinson, an expressman,, had his right leg fractured in two places, and Mr C. E. Hansen received some rather nasty bruises about the head. The injured persons were removed to the Hospital.

The steamer Mariposa, with the English mail, left San Francisco for Auckland on December 20th, being one day late. The Mararoa, with the colonial mails, arrived at Sao Francisco from Auckland on December 29th, being also one day late. The weather was glorious for the holiday. The first sports held under the auspices of the newly-established Caledonian Society took place on the Basin Reserve. The attendance was estimated at 6500. Pipers and well-known Southern dancers took part in the sports. J. W. Kiluer, a local ped, won the Caledonian Handicap, J. King second, and F. Barker third. All the events were well contested.

CHRISTOHUROH. ...-- January 1. The criminal calendar for the sessions which open on Tuesday next, is much heavier than last quarter's, and comprises four, ohargea of larceny, two of embezzlement, and one each of arson, burglary, rape, indecent assault, and abandoning a child. Mr Jamc-s Kirby, formerly editor of the South Canterbury Times, has been appointed sub-editor of the Lyttelton Times; vice Mr W. H. Atack, who takes the management of the Press Association at Wellington.

AUCKLAND. January 1. A man was drowned (name unknown) at the Gjufeen-street wharf at midnight, during tha New Year celebration. The officers and crew of the barque Laura endeavored, but unsuccessfully, to save him when he fell' over' the wharf. A man named Daniels is stated to be missing. The s.s.~Taupo left for Kaipara to load baulk Timber for Dunedin.

Admiral Tryon and party have returned from the lake country. A ball was given at the Northern Club in his honor.

TIMARU January 1. The weather is splendid for the New Tear's holiday, and the Caledonian sports were attended by about 5000 people, and were held on the new ground to the south of the town. The erent was again very keenly contested. INVEROARGILL. January 1. The weather, which for some weeks has been most unseasonable, was ertremely fine to-day. The only public amusement was the Caledonian sports, which brought together a very large number of people—about 5000—the gate money taken exceeding that for the two days in former years. LYTTELTON. January 1.

The Lyttelton regatta passed off rery successfully, though the wind in the morning was rather light. The water was excellent for rowing races. There was a large number of persons present, over 6000 travelling by train from Christchnrcb. The fouroared race was woa by the Kaiapoi crew, the other two boats, both Union Rowing Club, being swamped. The Senior Double Sculls was won by the Union Rowing Club boat the Kaiapoi boat which came in first being disqualified for taking the wrong course. Five vessels started in the Champion Trading Race, which was won by the Hero, of Lyttelton, the Recainia ketch being second. The Yacht Race was one of the finest seen here. Eight i boats entered, and the Isca, of Wellington, won easily. There was a keen _contest] for second place, which was gained by the Little Wonder, of LytteltonJ the Zephyr, of Akaroa, being third.
