WAIMATE BACKS. (by telegraph.) Wabiate, December 31. The first day's races of the Waimate snmmer meeting took place to-day. The racing, with the exception of the Parse, was very indifferent, and the attendance of the public limited. The weaiher was very variable, but though threatening rain nearly all day none fell. For this event Boco was made a very warm favorite. A good start was made, and with the exception of a slight mistake by Boco at the first hurdle, very little change came off till the horses reached the straight. There Firefly and Boco came away from Wildflower, but the judge's post was hardly passed when Wildflower caught and passed Firefly. No ether change t >ok place, Boco winning in a oanter by four lengths. Totalisator—L4l on the winner ; dividend, LI 13j.

Furtrader showed the way, and rounding the first turn had a lead of a length, with Vanity Fair next, and Borderman, close, on the mare's quarters, last. At the back Borderman ran up. and at the half-mile post the lot were once more even. Sweeping round the turn for home, however, Furtrader had shot his bolt, and fell back hopelessly beaten. Borderman and Vanity Fair raced on, bat on entering the straight the horse increased the slight lead he held, and won the best race of the day so far by about two lengths, the favorite whipping in by several lengths. Totalisator— L3O on the winner ; dividend, L 3 7s.
