XMAS MAIL BURNED

FIRE ON THE REMUERA ONLY PARCELS AFFECTED TWO DAYS FROM PANAMA Not a little excitement was created on the Remuera, which arrived in AVellington yesterday, when she was two days out from Panama, during the course of her voyage from the Old Country, as a result of a fire breaking out in No. 2 hold, amongst the Christmas mail. Inquiries made by a “Times” representative elicited the information that only parcel mail was affected, and the cause of the outbreak was not known. The vessel was slowed down for a brief period to enable the flames to be more quickly subdued, and this gave many of the passengers reason to believe that tlie course had been adopted tp facilitate an operation on one of the passengers. It is not possible at present to ascertain w’ho will be losers as-a result of the fire, but no doubt there will be a number of New Zealanders who will miss the tangible expressions of Christmas felicitations from friends and relatives at Home.
